Keeping your business in check isn't something you have to do every day but it does have to be done at some point in time. Too many companies today are falling victim to infrastructure breakdowns due to the lack of experienced or qualified people to execute the business strategy that was supposed to save them from their current demise.
With this in mind, I note that not a lot of companies maintain or perform a regular inventory of the people skills that are at their disposal. Many companies may be surprised to find that there are many skilled individuals within their organizations that just haven't been given the opportunity to demonstrate them.
It should come as no surprise that "resourcefulness" is more of an issue than the actual number of resources available. Management simply fails to recognize the talent pool that is willing and able to get the tasks done and second to that - JUST ASK.
I recommend performing a review of the major business processes in the organization and understanding what is relevant and what is just "pretty paper". Then, align the resources within the organization to perform the absolute necessities to sustain your business. NOTE: If you're not using the data to manage your business - STOP doing it. Focus on the key indicators and metrics of your business and use them to drive performance in REAL TIME.
The right people, in the right place, doing the right things will yield results. The key is determining what is truly RIGHT. There isn't a book in the world that can teach you what is best for your business. There are numerous tools available at your finger tips, but the wrong tool can't be expected to provide the right results.
Keep this in mind as you focus on your business and the results you are striving to achieve. If you don't understand the core competencies required to manage your business, it is difficult to determine whether you have the right people to get the job done.
Putting your business on a diet starts by not sugar coating the core message. Lean up or move on.

Chrysler Layoffs
This past week has been brutal with respect to Chrysler LLC announcing their restructuring plans to support their business going forward. While the prospect of 1000's of people losing their jobs is daunting, one has to consider just what the total impact of this will be.
The economies of scale are changing. The Canadian dollar has hit an all time high this week and continues to drive manufacturing sector jobs out of the country. The real question is, "What is the new NICHE?"
Put on your thinking caps because the next new billion dollar idea is about to spring forward. The market will start to see new products and services as never before. Are watching, waiting, or working?
I'm watching.

Career QUENCH - Be Dispensable (I Need a JOB)
Don't kid yourself - YOU are dispensable. While it may be uncomfortable to read "The world will go on without you", it's important to understand that this is the cold, harsh reality of business. Keep in mind that the same can be said of most companies. Another company is always ready and willing to fill the void left by a competitor.
If you are the only person who can do your job, you put the company at great risk. The company must be able to provide their product or service with or without you. A company will not jeopardize it's future for, or because of, YOU.
Is your career based on what YOU have to offer - Your Skills - Your Abilities? Or, are you defined by the company that ultimately pays you for your skills and services? Are you really in control of your future? Most of us in the "modern" world attempt to design our careers and training based on what companies are looking for.
If someone else is cutting your pay cheque, I think the answer to the last question has to be NO. If a company could consider any one of it's employees to be dispensable, isn't it about time that employees also consider that their company may be dispensable? Read the papers, listen to the news. How many companies have folded or closed, many without even telling their employees? Many don't find out until the very day it actually happens.
If you ever needed a reason to start your own business, this may just be the one. The risk to you and your family is greatly reduced when you have multiple income streams. In other words, the stress of losing a job or even maintaining a high profile career is greatly reduced when you can claim financial independence from one SINGLE SOURCE of income.
Too many people go to school, study, join the workforce, gain experience, then spend the next 40 - 50 years of their life hoping that they will be gainfully employed. Why do so many people "hope" they get the job of their dreams? The answer is simple, their hopes and dreams are shaped by what "they think" the company wants, not what they themselves have to offer.
Multiple sources of income, no matter how you acquire them, is the only way to reduce the "hold" that most companies place on their "most valuable" employees.
Donald Trump has no problem saying, "Your Fired". Why? Donald Trump is looking for an apprentice to oversee an area of business that does not yet exist. The people being "FIRED" aren't actual employees of the Trump corporation and their termination is not jeopardizing any current business within the organization.
It's all about PROFIT. If the company is losing money, they will make the changes necessary to ensure the bottom line is not jeopardized.
I highly recommend starting YOUR own business to at least give you options. Start up when you don't need the extra money. When the money does start rolling in, at least you will have the option of deciding your next move. BEFORE the company you're working for today makes that decision for you.

Quit Smoking
Nothing could be worse than losing business because of a bad habit like smoking cigarettes.
I am an ex-smoker so I'm probably a little more sensitive to this than most. They say the most opinionated, hardest driving anti-smoking advocates are ex-smokers.
Stale cigarette odours are horrible. The smell lingers forever. I can tell you that if it was my choice, fresh is worth a lot when it comes to placing business.
People go out of their way to avoid offensive odours. It doesn't make sense to make it part of your business.
